Carnet Passage en Douane

The 'Carnet de Passage en Douane' (CPD) is an international customs document which covers the temporary admission of motor vehicles in foreign countries. The carnet is valid for either 3 or 12 months from the issue date and it allows the CPD holder to cross up to 25 borders depending on the individual validity of the CPD. The document removes the hassle of lodging your original logbook at the point of entry and some times the requirement to the leave a cash deposit with customs officials.

Requirements for obtaining the carnet

  • Recent valuation report of the vehicle by an AA technical department.
  • A Bank/Insurance/Guarantee/Cash deposit of an amount to be determined based on the value of the vehicle and the countries to be visited.
  • Copy of log book
  • Copy of passport

This document is used to identify your motor vehicle in each country you travel across. The CPD is derived from the French and means ‘notebook’. It consists of import and export vouchers that are retained by the customs authorities in the countries visited.

During the 3 or 12 months the CPD is valid the document enables visitors to temporarily import their vehicles for a limited period of time with a minimum of formalities and without the normal time- consuming documentation routines across the various countries.

History

The AA of Kenya was founded in 1919 by Lionel Douglas Galton Fenzi as the Royal East Africa Automobile Association. Its objectives and aims were to promote and safeguard the interests of motorists by providing information and advise about the purchase, maintenance and repair of vehicles, negotiating attractive insurance premiums, road mapping and the setting up of petrol depots.
